Teleconferencing

It is possible to use Mobian with the PinePhone and attend teleconferences using Jitsi, Element and Google Meet. Others could work as well, but haven't been tested. Video is possible too through either the front camera or rear camera using a special script. In any case you will need to install the latest Firefox (79). You can find the installation instructions here along with the tweaks that will make the permission dialogs for microphone and camera usable on the small screen. Note that sometimes there is reportedly some lag, but that might be due to other factors such as the internet connection.

Another option is to connect to meetings using a telephone number if that's available. This can also be done with a headset that plugs into the 3.5mm jack, but be sure to plug it in and turn off any physical mute before making the phone call. This helps to ensure that the alsa profile gets switched to the correct microphone on the headset instead of the built-in microphone on the phone.

Using the front camera

There is a script that can be used to switch between back and front camera (TODO: make sure it still works(It doesn't)). https://gitlab.manjaro.org/manjaro-arm/packages/community/phosh/pinephone-manjaro-tweaks/-/blob/master/pinephone-camera-setup.sh Invoke with

$ pinephone-camera-setup.sh front

to use the front camera.

Jitsi

  • (Optional) connect headset to the 3.5mm jack and turn off any physical mute button
  • Go to https://meet.jit.si (or other Jitsi server)
  • Select a meeting room
  • Wait for the permissions dialogs to show up for camera and mic (these can take some time)
  • Click allow for the permissions you want

Element

  • (Optional) connect headset to the 3.5mm jack and turn off any physical mute button
  • The room view in Element gets far too squished
    • You can turn of the community filter panel on the left, which uses space. Click the three dots button beside your avatar on the top-left then turn off Preferences → Advanced → Enable Community Filter Panel to get a bit more space.
    • This userContent.css might help (place the file in your .mozilla/firefox/<profile_dir>/chrome directory
.mx_RoomView {
	min-width: 350px !important;
}
  • Log into element using your element server's URL or https://app.element.io for the global one
  • Open a chat with someone you want to chat
  • Click the telephone icon or the video camera icon
  • Click allow for the permissions you want

Google Meet

  • (Optional) connect headset to the 3.5mm jack and turn off any physical mute button
  • Use Firefox to go to https://meet.google.com
  • Log in as usual and pick the meeting
  • Wait for the permission dialogs to show up for camera and mic
  • Click allow for the permissions you want

Tick-tick-tick problems

Sometimes, when on a teleconference it is typical to go on mute when listening to others. Unfortunately, there is a problem where others can hear a tick-tick-tick noise on the other end. It feeds back and can get loud and annoying.

There is a workaround listed on the troubleshooting page involving turning down the gain on the “Mic Boost.”
